How Do I Edit Blog Permalinks?

The ability to create custom blog permalinks is important for your overall website SEO strategy, and helps evergreen content stay relevant.

A permalink is the permanent URL to your individual blog post, as well as your category and tag archives. A permalink is the web address used to link to your content.

By default, SoCast uses web URLs which have the date and blog post title in them.  This is default WordPress behaviour and is designed for optimal blog SEO, and what we recommend. However we do offer settings that allow you to customize how the web URL looks.

Once logged in, scroll to Website > Blogs > Blog Settings > Permalink Common Settings.

From there, you can choose from 1 of the following options:

Plain: This option uses the post ID. If you choose this option it will also be used for all post types, including pages etc. Looks like https://example.com/?p=78

Day & Name: This option is similar to the existing setup, and will display year, month, day, title. Looks like https://example.com/2021/07/28/post-title

Month & Name: This option is similar to the existing setup, and will use year, month, title. Looks like https://example.com/2021/08/post-title

Numeric: This option uses the post ID.  https://example.com/archives/78

Post Name: Uses the blog post name. For example, “This Is A Great Post!” becomes this-is-a-great-post for the URL. This is how pages currently work. We don’t reccomend this for blogs, as coming up with multiple unique post names will be difficult.

Custom: You choose what options you want to add to the URL structure. For example, day or post name.

Things To Keep In Mind

  1. While we offer the ‘plain’ and ‘numeric’ options, we do not recommend using them. To increase your SEO and make sure your articles are easily found in search results, use one of the other options.
  2. If you do decide to use the ‘numeric’ permalink option, know this will also change the URL for Local Listings on your site.
  3. Please make your URLs unique. If no unique URL is found, it will result in a 404 not found error.
  4. A permalink change will affect all posts, including previously published ones, and any new posts moving forward.
