Why Is The Phone Number Field Not Mandatory For Member SignUp?

The SoCast goal for our membership tool is to boost conversion of users into members. Each new required field reduces the conversion rate,  and has always been optional because e-mail is mandatory. We also find many users may be uncomfortable providing their phone number due to privacy/anti-spam concerns.

If phone number is an option that you absolutely require, one option is to run contests where you can make the phone number field required/mandatory. This way, people are more incentivized to give more of their information.
